Through Chef Lisa Schroeder’s travels, she came to realize that the best meals of a country are not found in its restaurants. They’re found in its homes, made with love by mothers cooking for their families. So, in addition to Mother’s regular menu where she serves comfort food from mothers around the world, Chef Lisa highlights a different mother each month and features some of her special dishes. This special mother is called the Mother of the Month (or “M.O.M.”), and her photograph, story and menu take a prominent place at the beginning of Mother’s menu. We choose a mother that allows us to take advantage of the seasonal availability of ingredients, such as a Greek mother in the summer months and a Polish mother in the winter months. Some past M.O.M.’s have been: Mary Grillo and the cuisine of Sicily, featuring Rigatoni & Meatballs and Pasta y Fagioli, Rose Hassin and the cuisine of Austria, featuring Wiener Schnitzel and Beef Goulash, Mireille Cohen and the cuisine of Morocco, featuring Cous Cous and Lamb Shank Tagine, We have also featured mothers from Spain, Greece, Slovakia, Cuba, Mexico, Thailand and others. Mother's Bistro & Bar serves up slow-cooked food in the heart of downtown Portland. Featuring authentic cooking from mothers around the world, signature dishes include pot roast, meat loaf, chicken and dumplings and crab cakes, as well as featured dishes from a different mother each month.

With Lisa Schroeder's Comfort Food, everything is made from scratch using the best possible ingredients -- great salads, soups, homemade biscuits and desserts, too. In addition to the sunny dining room, the separate Velvet Lounge with chandeliers and gilded mirrors is perfect for a pre-or post-theatre cocktail. Distressed off-white furniture, mother-themed art and press clips featuring the owner set the scene. Families and couples line up six deep for weekend brunch to sample eggs Benedict with hollandaise and migas--scrambled eggs, tortilla strips and chipotle sour cream. During lunch and dinner, a multiethnic comfort-food menu is bolstered by monthly specials featuring an honorary mother's recipes.
